Peoria Nonprofit Accounting Basics: Board Reporting and Compliance

Get In Touch

Running a nonprofit in Peoria, Arizona, comes with a unique set of responsibilities—especially when it comes to accurate financial reporting and staying compliant with ever-evolving state and federal regulations. Whether you’re a small community nonprofit, a faith-based organization, or a growing 501(c)(3), understanding nonprofit accounting basics is essential to maintaining your tax-exempt status and earning the trust of your board, donors, and the public.

At Concierge Consulting & Accounting, PLLC, we specialize in nonprofit accounting services for organizations across Peoria, Glendale, Phoenix, and the greater Valley. Here’s what every nonprofit board member and executive director needs to know about nonprofit financials, compliance, and clear board reporting.

Why Nonprofit Accounting in Arizona Is Unique

Nonprofits in Arizona are subject to specific state and federal compliance requirements. From annual filings with the IRS (Form 990) to Arizona Charitable Organization Registrations, your financial records must be accurate, timely, and audit-ready.

Unlike for-profit entities, nonprofits operate under fund accounting—a system that tracks revenues by source and restricts funds based on donor intent or grant stipulations. That’s why general bookkeeping or standard accounting services often fall short for nonprofit organizations.

Key Financial Reports for Your Peoria Nonprofit Board

Transparent, easy-to-read board reporting isn’t just good governance—it’s vital for strategic decision-making and regulatory compliance. At a minimum, your board should receive:

  • Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet): Shows your assets, liabilities, and net assets at a specific point in time.
  • Statement of Activities (Income Statement): Details revenues and expenses by program, supporting services, and restrictions.
  • Statement of Functional Expenses: Breaks down spending into program services, management, and fundraising—critical for IRS reporting.
  • Cash Flow Forecast: Helps boards understand short- and long-term liquidity, especially when managing grants or capital campaigns.
  • Budget vs. Actuals: Tracks financial performance against your approved budget to support stewardship and accountability.

If your board isn’t getting these reports—or if they’re unclear or delayed—it may be time to consider professional nonprofit accounting support.
