What Is Business Advisory and Consulting?

Get In Touch

Running a business is rewarding — but it comes with complexity. Many business owners in Scottsdale, Phoenix, and across Arizona find themselves making major decisions without the right financial guidance. That’s exactly where business advisory services come in.

Business advisory and consulting goes far beyond traditional accounting. It means having a trusted expert in your corner — someone who helps you plan strategically, solve problems proactively, and grow with confidence. At Concierge Consulting & Accounting, we believe every business owner deserves that kind of support.

In this post, we’ll break down what business advisory services really are, what they include, and why working with a Scottsdale CPA and business advisor can make a meaningful difference in your business’s future.

What Are Business Advisory Services?

Business advisory services are professional guidance services designed to help business owners make smarter decisions. They go beyond filing tax returns or keeping your books in order. Instead, they focus on the bigger picture — your strategy, your finances, and your goals.

A business advisor works closely with you to understand your business. They help you identify risks, spot opportunities, and plan for the road ahead. Think of them as a trusted financial partner, not just a number-cruncher.

For small and mid-sized businesses in Scottsdale and the greater Phoenix area, this kind of personalized guidance is especially valuable. Many local business owners are wearing multiple hats every day. Therefore, having an advisor who understands both the financial and operational sides of your business can be a game-changer.

How Business Advisory Differs from Traditional Accounting

Traditional accounting looks backward. It records what has already happened — your income, expenses, and tax obligations. Business advisory, on the other hand, looks forward.

For example, a traditional accountant prepares your tax return. A business advisor helps you plan your tax strategy throughout the year. Additionally, they help you evaluate major decisions — like whether to hire, expand, or restructure your business entity.

Both services are important. However, business advisory adds a layer of strategic thinking that most business owners truly need.

What Do Business Advisory Services Include?

Business advisory services can cover a wide range of needs. The right mix depends on your industry, stage of growth, and specific goals. Here are some of the most common areas:

  • Strategic planning: Setting clear business goals and building a roadmap to reach them.
  • Financial analysis: Reviewing your financial data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities.
  • Cash flow management: Helping you understand where your money goes and how to maintain healthy cash flow.
  • Entity structure guidance: Advising on the right business structure — LLC, S-Corp, C-Corp — for your situation.
  • Tax planning: Developing proactive strategies to reduce your tax burden legally.
  • Business performance reviews: Evaluating key metrics and helping you course-correct when needed.
  • Growth and scaling advice: Preparing your business to handle growth responsibly.
  • Exit and succession planning: Thinking ahead about the future of your business.

At Concierge Consulting & Accounting, our business advisory approach is tailored to each client. We serve startups, growing companies, and established businesses throughout Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Paradise Valley, and beyond.

Why Cash Flow Is a Core Advisory Focus

Cash flow is one of the most common pain points for small business owners. Many profitable businesses still struggle with cash flow. Because of this, understanding your cash position is essential — not just at tax time, but year-round.

A business advisor helps you monitor cash flow regularly. They also help you plan for slow seasons, unexpected expenses, and growth investments. As a result, you spend less time worrying about money and more time growing your business.

Who Benefits Most from Business Advisory Services?

Business advisory services are valuable at every stage of business. However, certain situations make them especially important:

  • Startups: New businesses face big decisions early — entity selection, accounting systems, pricing, and more. Starting with the right guidance sets a strong foundation.
  • Growing businesses: Growth brings complexity. More employees, more revenue, and more risk require smarter planning.
  • Business owners facing transitions: Selling, restructuring, or bringing on a partner are major events. Advisory guidance is critical during these moments.
  • Businesses struggling with profitability: Sometimes revenue looks good on paper but profit is hard to find. An advisor helps you dig into the numbers and find solutions.
  • Owners who wear too many hats: Many small business owners in the Scottsdale area handle everything themselves. A business advisor gives them a trusted resource to lean on.

In short, if you’re making important financial or strategic decisions, business advisory services can help you make them with confidence.

The Scottsdale and Arizona Business Landscape

Arizona has become one of the most entrepreneurial states in the country. Scottsdale, in particular, attracts a diverse community of business owners — from professional service firms to retail, real estate, and technology companies.

Furthermore, the Phoenix metro area — including Tempe, Mesa, and Paradise Valley — is home to thousands of small and growing businesses. These business owners often share the same needs: proactive financial guidance, smart tax planning, and a trusted advisor who knows their business personally.

At Concierge Consulting & Accounting, we understand the Arizona business environment. We also serve clients across the US, so our advisory perspective is broad and current.

The Concierge Approach to Business Advisory

At Concierge Consulting & Accounting, we do things differently. Our founder, Theresa Valade, CPA — a Forbes Best-in-State CPA — built the firm around a simple idea: accounting and advisory should feel personal, proactive, and practical.

We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all advice. Instead, we take the time to understand your business, your goals, and your challenges. Then we work alongside you to build strategies that actually fit your situation.

Moreover, our team brings expertise across tax return preparation, accounting and bookkeeping, attestation, and tax credit funds — in addition to business advisory. This means your advisor understands the full financial picture of your business, not just one piece of it.

Advisory That Fits Your Stage of Growth

We work with businesses at every stage. For startups, we help establish smart financial systems from the very beginning. For growing companies, we help manage complexity and plan for scale. For mature businesses, we help optimize performance and plan for the future.

Additionally, we believe in education. We want our clients to understand their numbers — not just receive a report. Because of this, our advisory conversations are always clear, practical, and jargon-free.

Business Advisory vs. Business Consulting: Is There a Difference?

You may hear the terms “business advisory” and “business consulting” used interchangeably. In practice, they overlap significantly. However, there are some subtle differences worth noting.

Business consulting typically refers to project-based work. A consultant comes in to solve a specific problem and then moves on. Business advisory, on the other hand, tends to be an ongoing relationship. Your advisor becomes a long-term partner who knows your business deeply.

At Concierge Consulting & Accounting, we offer both. We can step in for a specific challenge or serve as your ongoing business advisor throughout the year. Either way, you get personalized, expert guidance tailored to your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Business Advisory Services

What is the difference between a CPA and a business advisor?

A CPA is a licensed professional focused on accounting, tax, and financial reporting. A business advisor focuses on strategy, planning, and decision-making. Many CPAs — like our team at Concierge Consulting & Accounting — offer both. This gives clients a comprehensive, integrated perspective on their business finances.

Do small businesses really need business advisory services?

Absolutely. Small businesses often face the same complex decisions as larger companies — but with fewer resources and less margin for error. Therefore, having an experienced advisor is especially valuable for small business owners who are navigating growth, tax planning, or major financial decisions.

How often should I meet with my business advisor?

It depends on your needs and stage of business. Some clients benefit from monthly check-ins, while others prefer quarterly reviews. Additionally, many clients reach out between scheduled meetings when important decisions arise. We work with each client to find the right cadence.

Can a business advisor help with tax planning?

Yes — and this is one of the most valuable services an advisor provides. Proactive tax planning throughout the year can make a significant difference in your overall tax burden. However, every situation is different, and tax laws change regularly. We always recommend scheduling a consultation to discuss your specific circumstances.

Does Concierge Consulting & Accounting work with businesses outside of Scottsdale?

Yes. While we’re based in Scottsdale, Arizona, we serve clients throughout Arizona — including Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa, and Paradise Valley — as well as across the United States. Our concierge approach works wherever you are.
